a Digital Film — 4.24 mins, MMVI.
Premise:
A woman leaves a bag at a station and a stalker
brings it home to her.
Synopsis:
A woman walks into London station waiting room.
She seems jumpy, especially when an Asian man arrives. He understands
her fluster and offers her a cigarette, which she refuses. He sits
too close. Hurrying away, she leaves her bag. The man picks it up
and, unseen by her, follows. He watches, silent, as she unlocks a
resisting front door, then he offers to trade the bag for a cup of
tea. She denies it's hers, but the door swings open and in he walks.
She struggles to push him out. Her son appears and the man opts to
go but the door is stuck again. She panics to help him… much too
late.
Statement of Intent:
"The Pick Up" responds to the London bombings
of 07.07 and subsequent readings of terrorism. What should we really
be frightened of? I also investigate the effect of background sound
on a story, reflecting the noise of political and cultural assumptions.
Absence of mood music (which prompts a particular emotional response),
leaves the audience freer to draw on their own empathies and reactions.
